Custom Compounding

Non-sterile

At Cornerstone Pharmacy and Compounding, we know that not all medications affect everyone in the same way. Our experienced and licensed compounding pharmacists and technicians provide medications that are unique to your individual situation and treatment plan, without compromising the effectiveness. We use state-of-the-art labs (updated in 2020 to meet federal and state regulations) dedicated only to compounded medications so we can best serve our patients and healthcare professionals.

What is custom compounding?

Compounded medications are customized – “made from scratch” – to the specific needs of the individual patient. Pharmacists mix ingredients together in the exact strength, dosage, form, and flavor that the patient requires, allowing medications to be adjusted without compromising the medication’s effectiveness.

Custom compounding may be right for a patient (including our animal friends) that…

  • has allergies or sensitivities to ingredients in commercially produced medications. Compounding pharmacists can create a personalized medication, formulated to give the patient the treatment they need while leaving out the problematic ingredient(s).

  • cannot obtain a commercially-produced medication due to discontinuation. If a pharmaceutical company stops manufacturing a drug in mass quantities, patients can still obtain the medicine through compounding facilities.

  • needs a specific combination of ingredients that creates a unique medication. Not all medications are available in a commercial environment. A compounding pharmacist can work closely with a physician to determine ingredients that would effectively treat the patient.

  • requires a specific strength, or dose, of the medicine. Commercially manufactured medications are typically only available in a few strengths and may not suit the patient.

  • doesn’t like the flavor of the prescribed medicine. Although adults may be affected by flavors of medicines, it is most often seen in pediatric and veterinary compounding. Children and pets are more likely to take medicine when it tastes good!

  • can’t afford their medications. Medication may be able to be compounded as a similar product with additional ingredients – free from dyes and fillers – at a competitive price.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can my child – or my elderly parent – take compounded medication?2022-03-29T19:19:26+00:00

Yes! Children and the elderly are often the types of patients who benefit most from compounding. It is common for parents to have a tough time getting their children to take medicine because of the taste. A compounding pharmacist can work directly with the physician and the patient to select a flavoring agent, such as bubblegum, grape, tutti frutti, or vanilla butternut, which provides both an appropriate match for the medication’s properties and the patient’s taste preferences. This applies to veterinary patients too!

Is compounding legal and safe?2022-03-29T19:19:25+00:00

Compounding has been part of healthcare since the origins of pharmacy, and is widely used today in all areas of the industry. Over the last few decades, compounding’s resurgence has benefited largely from advances in technology, quality control and research methodology. The Food and Drug Administration has stated that compounded prescriptions are both ethical and legal as long as they are prescribed by a licensed practitioner for a specific patient and compounded by a licensed pharmacy. In addition, compounding is regulated by state boards of pharmacy.

Is compounding expensive?2022-03-29T19:19:22+00:00

Compounding may or may not cost more than conventional medication. The cost depends on factors such as the type of ingredients and equipment required, plus the time the pharmacist spends researching and preparing the medication. Fortunately, compounding pharmacists have access to pure-grade quality chemicals which dramatically lower overall costs and allow them to be very competitive with commercially manufactured products.

What kinds of prescriptions can be compounded?2022-03-29T19:19:21+00:00

Almost any kind! Compounded prescriptions are ideal for any patient requiring unique dosages and/or delivery devices.

Does my prescriber know about compounding?2022-03-29T19:19:17+00:00

Prescription compounding is a rapidly growing component of many physicians’ practices, but some may not realize the extent of compounding’s resurgence in recent years due to today’s climate of aggressive marketing by drug manufacturers. Ask your healthcare practitioner about compounding options, or call us directly. Through the triad relationship of patient, prescriber, and pharmacist, we can work together to solve unique medical problems.
